Life-changing opportunity: Gii provides free ESL and CDL training to refugees
The Global Impact Initiative (Gii) is dedicated to helping refugee families from Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine and other places integrate into American society. To address language barriers and employment bottlenecks, Gii has launched a two-pronged program to help refugees obtain stable employment opportunities, achieve economic independence and make positive contributions to local communities through English as a Second Language (ESL) training and Commercial Driver License (CDL) training.

I. Project Background and Objectives
More than 60% of refugee adults in the United States have little to no English communication skills, and more than 80% do not speak English enough to meet local job or vocational training requirements. This prevents them from using the professional skills they have accumulated in their home countries to work in popular industries such as commercial trucking or healthcare. In addition, the US trucking industry faces a serious labor shortage. According to the American Trucking Association (ATA), the driver shortage is expected to exceed 160,000 by 2030.
Recognizing this challenge and opportunity, Gii has developed a program for refugees that covers language training and vocational skills improvement. This program is completely free to help them obtain CDL qualifications, fill industry vacancies, and achieve sustainable career development.
II. Project Components
1. English as a Second Language (ESL) Training
Gii has partnered with House of Tutors (HOFT), an academy with more than 40 years of teaching experience, to provide intensive ESL training for refugees with low or no English proficiency.
Course Features:
Two 12-week phased courses, 23 hours of instruction per week, emphasizing reading and speaking guidance, designed specifically for preparation for the CDL knowledge test.
Small class size: 6-10 students per class to ensure personalized instruction.
5 hours of English conversation practice per week: communicate with local American partners to help refugees improve practical language skills.
Flexible teaching hours: Monday to Friday evening 6:30-9:30, weekend noon 12:00-4:00.
2. CDL Training (Entry-Level Driver Theory and Practice)
After completing the ESL course, students will enter the CDL training phase to help them meet all the requirements for obtaining a CDL. The training is divided into two phases:
CDL Theory Course (ELDT Online Training):
Gii is approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to offer online ELDT theory courses.
The course covers driving and non-driving core topics to help students pass the state knowledge exam.
Additional resources and support are provided, including practice tests, translation assistance, and personalized coaching.
CDL Practical Training and Exam:
Complete the medical exam, vision test, and Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) exam.
Arrange practical driving training and road skills testing conducted by a certified provider.

III. Career and Salary Outlook
Refugees who complete ESL and CDL training will be able to enter the U.S. trucking industry, a field that not only pays well but also has stable employment opportunities.
Starting hourly wage: Approximately $25-$30, with annual salary up to $60,000-$80,000.
Experienced truck drivers: Hourly wage can exceed $40+, with annual salary exceeding $100,000.
IV. Success story: From refugee to commercial truck driver
Khalid is a refugee from Afghanistan who drove large vehicles for the US government, but was unable to find a job after arriving in the United States due to language barriers. Through the intensive ESL training provided by Gii, Khalid improved his English proficiency in just 6 months and successfully passed the CDL knowledge test and driving skills test.
First job: Khalid was hired as a truck driver by a local logistics company, with a starting wage of $28 per hour and an annual salary of $65,000.
Career Development: One year later, he was promoted to senior driver with his experience and skills, and his hourly wage increased to $38, and his annual salary exceeded $85,000.
"Gii's training not only helped me find a stable and high-paying job, but also helped me regain my confidence and dignity in a foreign country. If you also want to change your life, this program is the best opportunity." —— Khalid
